The film follows Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise), a self-centered car dealer who discovers his estranged father has passed away and left a $3 million fortune to an unnamed beneficiary at a mental institution.
Charlie visits the institution and discovers the beneficiary is his older brother, Raymond Babbitt (Dustin Hoffman), an autistic savant whose existence Charlie never knew about. Raymond possesses an incredible memory and genius-level calculating skills but struggles with social interaction and strictly adheres to rigid routines.
Hoping to gain control of the inheritance, Charlie essentially kidnaps Raymond and plans to take him to Los Angeles.
Because Raymond refuses to fly due to his fear of plane crashes, the two embark on a cross-country road trip in a 1949 Buick Roadmaster convertible.
During the journey, Charlie’s initial frustration turns into a deep emotional bond as he learns to understand his brother's unique mind.
Along the way, Charlie uses Raymond’s extraordinary mathematical abilities to count cards at a blackjack table in Las Vegas, successfully winning enough money to pay off his own massive personal debts.Ultimately, Charlie undergoes a significant moral transformation. He lets go of his obsession over the inheritance money and prioritizes Raymond's safety and well-being, accepting that Raymond requires specialized institutional care.
