ANTIQUE WICKER PICNIC BASKET CIRCA 1880'S
This is AN ANTIQUE PICNIC BASKET I HAVE HAD ON HAND FOR MANY MANY YEARS, HANDED DOWN FROM GRANDMOM AND HANDED DOWN FROM HER MOM, MY GREAT GRANDMA! Story was, great grandma walked to meet my great granddad with this basket filled with lunch for him at his job. This would have been in the 1880's. This basket has seen many many years and is still in pretty fair antique condition overall for its age. Of course the straps where you close it up are barely there, and one is missing, and it does look like this was repaired many times in early 1900's so they could use it. I left it as is. Would be GREAT for someone to restore and I would love to see that done. The basket itself is really in great condition, its the handles and latches which are worn and need work.
Other than the family story, I dont know much about this, except it doesnt seem like wicker, more like a thin "wood"?, one top handle is woven twine wicker maybe, the other leather, did it come like that OR did the other wicker handle break quickly and they decided to replace it with the leather. The leather is very old looking. The fasteners area, one is there, but broken slightly with age, the other side it looks like grama attempted to use one of grampas boot straps to fashion a latch.
size is 15”x9.5x11”
Sad to sell this but I am moving and can’t take much with
