The story is set in Philadelphia and centers on Emira Tucker, a 25-year-old, aimless Black woman working part-time as a babysitter for a wealthy white family. The plot is set into motion one evening when Emira's employer, a lifestyle influencer named Alix Chamberlain, asks her to take her two-year-old daughter, Briar, out of the house during a family emergency. While walking through an upscale supermarket, a security guard and a customer racially profile Emira, falsely accusing her of kidnapping the toddler. A bystander captures the tense confrontation on camera before the situation is defused. In the aftermath, Alix becomes hyper-fixated on "fixing" things and championing Emira, while Emira herself just wants to move past the humiliation and figure out her adult life. The narrative grows more complicated when a figure from Alix's past intersects with Emira's life, putting the characters on an inevitable collision course.
Flaws: Original price sticker not completely removed on dust cover. Doesn’t impact the book.
