Vintage Catholic sick call crucifix in walnut, made in a streamlined Art Deco style. It has stepped layers, ribbed carved ends, and a gold-tone metal corpus with an angled INRI plaque. It's also a hidden box. The front panel slides off and reveals two carved candle sockets in the crossbeam and a long compartment in the base. Families kept this kind of crucifix at home so everything was ready when a priest came to give Last Rites to someone who was sick or dying. The compartment usually held candles, a holy water bottle, cotton, and a cloth. It works as a devotional wall cross or as a meaningful piece of Catholic history. There's a keyhole hanger on the back, along with a gold foil seal with a cross over the letter M. Measures about 12.5 inches tall and 8.5 inches wide.
